Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Subhajyoti (Shubho) Bandyopadhyay

"I am right now involved in researching the issue of Net neutrality - should your local ISP be allowed to charge content providers like Youtube or Google for preferential treatment of their content to your homes? Does such an arrangement help the consumers, or does it just line the ISP's pockets? Equally importantly, does the ISP have an extra incentive to expand his network capacity due to this extra income? We have modeled this environment analytically, and provide some answers from an economic perspective. As the internet becomes an increasingly dominant infrastructure to deliver all types of content (for example, Verizon delivers internet access, television and telephone through a single fiber optic line to some of its consumers' homes), these economic issues will become all the more important in shaping the future of the internet. Stay tuned for more on this topic!"
