Curriculum

Schedules of courses/milestones are personalized based on a students' academic background. The following is a typical program of study, with the assumption that the student begins the Ph.D. program with the required background in Business, Calculus and C Programming.

Substantive Coursework

Information Systems/Information Technology (IS/IT) Students

Four (4) Doctoral Seminars (one in each regular semester) must be completed for credit. The following courses must also be completed, although not necessarily for credit.

Operations Management (OM) Students

Two (2) Doctoral Seminars (one in each Fall semester) must be completed for credit along with the following courses:

Non-Credit Courses

Courses may be taken not for credit when either:

  • The Fall/Spring semester course load is greater than 9 hours
  • The Summer semester course load is greater than 6 hours

Faculty teaching the course will specify the exact requirements for each doctoral student.

Research Paper

By the end of the Spring semester of the second year, students are required to submit, for evaluation by a faculty committee, a first draft of a research paper. The Faculty Committee will be selected by the student in consultation with the Ph.D. Coordinator. The committee will make specific recommendations for further development of the paper.

Written Qualifying Exams

For IS/IT Students

The exams will consist of open-ended questions based on the four seminars, and/or in the areas of Database Management Systems, Telecommunications, Systems Analysis and Design, and Data Mining.

For OM Students

The exams will consist of open-ended questions based on the two seminars, and additional readings prescribed by faculty members in Operations Management.
