Program Overview
The Master's of Science in Marketing program is an intensive research-oriented experience designed for students who wish to pursue research in an academic environment. The M.S. program is a 30-credit, non-thesis program designed primarily for students whose eventual goal is to earn a Ph.D. and pursue an academic career. The M.S. program provides a strong foundation of research skills that enhance students' prospects for admission into Ph.D. programs at other universities. The program is not designed for students interested in managerial careers in business: that purpose is served by the MBA program.
Program of Study
Because the M.S. program is relatively small, each student's program of study is individually tailored to some degree, depending upon the student's background, preparation, and interests. In all instances, individual programs of study conform to the University of Florida Graduate School's rules and regulations:
- Students must successfully complete a minimum of 30 hours of coursework and a final comprehensive examination.
- At least half of any student's required minimum credits must be earned in Marketing courses.
- A maximum of 6 credits may be taken below the 5000 level and those must be outside of Marketing.
- A 3.0 minimum GPA is required for graduation.
Since many students will view this program as a stepping stone to a PhD, students are strongly encouraged to participate in research and to receive "hands on" training in addition to completing required coursework. This participation can take several forms including working with faculty and other graduate students on projects of mutual interest as well as undertaking original research, possibly as part of an optional master's thesis. If a thesis is written (under the direction of the student's supervisory committee), the required oral comprehensive examination will be devoted to a thesis defense.
