Program Administration
Supervisory CommitteeProcedure. A temporary supervisory committee will be appointed for each student prior to the student's first semester of study. This committee is composed of the graduate coordinator (member) and one other faculty member (chair). A major purpose of this temporary committee is to make preliminary assessments of the student's ability to work in the areas of initial interest and to stimulate the student to evaluate carefully his/her own interests and qualifications with respect to these areas. This committee will also provide the preliminary counseling regarding course registration and will advise the student of all program requirements.
The (permanent) supervisory committee shall be established no later than the end of the first semester of the student's tenure in the program. This committee shall be appointed by the graduate coordinator in consultation with the student, with major consideration being given to the student's educational and research interests.
Duties and Responsibilities. The duties of the supervisory committee are as follows:
- To inform the student of all regulations governing the degree sought;
- to meet immediately after appointment, review the qualifications of the student and to discuss and approve a program of study; and
- to conduct the final comprehensive examination.
Membership. The supervisory committee shall consist of no fewer than two members selected from the graduate faculty. The chair must be drawn from the Marketing Department faculty, and the other member may be drawn from outside of Marketing. Additional committee members may be appointed if warranted.
Evaluation of StudentsEach student's educational progress is monitored regularly throughout his/her program. Students are required to submit an Annual Report of their progress in the program. This Annual Report will be used in periodic reviews that provide concrete suggestions for improvements and recognition of outstanding achievement. This process consists of the following steps:
- Regular informal reports at the end of each semester on student progress by faculty in direct contact with students either through courses, research, or other means will be made to the graduate coordinator and the Chair of the student's supervisory committee.
- Formal review of M.S. students by the graduate faculty of the department during or immediately following the spring semester of each year. The results of the faculty's deliberations will be summarized in a formal letter to the student. This letter will be written by the student's supervisory committee chair.
Final comprehensive examination. The final examination is a two-hour oral examination constructed and administered by the student's supervisory committee. At least two members of the supervisory committee must participate. The exam will cover all coursework taken during the program; students should consult their advisors for guidance in preparation for the exam. The final exam is taken during the student's final semester in the program and may be taken no more than twice. In the event the student writes a thesis, the oral examination can be on the thesis topic.
